EDI and barcode labeling

EDI and barcode

Correct barcode labeling ensures that goods are delivered more reliably.

Barcode

Labeling shipments with barcodes further increases the level of security and quality of goods forwarding.

Barcoded items pass through a number of registration points, providing:

  • Checks in every stage of the transport process
  • Faster handling of goods
  • Non-conformance reporting
  • Track and trace

The combination of EDI transfer and barcode labeling allows for a speedy goods transport flow and efficient information management.

Barcode labeling

The label must be made of a material that can tolerate physical stresses, and the underlying structure of the parcel must not affect the legibility of the codes. In addition, it must be able to withstand the conditions of the Norwegian climate. Label suppliers may make recommendations.

Barcode labels must be placed on the natural top side of the item. This is because the scanners (barcode readers) used by PostNord are positioned above the conveyor belt in the sorting facility in our hub in Oslo. In the case of full pallets, the barcode label must be placed on one side of the pallet.

Software

How can I make the production of shipment information and labels more efficient?

There are two main options, either using an in-house developed system or using software developed by a third party supplier.

In-house developed systems

In-house developed systems require the inclusion of a module in the ERP system that can be used to electronically transmit shipment information to transporters. This system must also be able to produce barcode labels.

Software from third party supplier

Software from a third party supplier can either be used in isolation or be integrated with your ERP system. PostNord EDI department can help you find the best solution based on the needs of your business and your existing IT infrastructure.
